State of Emergency
As of February 24, 2022, Russian Armed Forces have attacked several cities in Ukraine according to major news outlets:
- Tanks were less than 20 miles from Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv
- At least 100 people have died, with the violence rapidly escalating
- Kyiv has imposed a curfew and train stations have been converted to emergency shelters
Enduring Social Responsibility
The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit has been supporting YMCAs in the Ukraine since 2019 as part of a global YMCA partnership. Our YMCA has been providing resources to assist the Ukrainian YMCA with their child and youth programs. The Ukrainian YMCAs also help us connect with our global community.

The YMCA was established in Ukraine in 1902. After being banned from 1917 to 1991 when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union, the YMCA was reorganized and restarted in 1993. (Data provided by YMCA of the USA).

The Ukraine YMCA
