Seniors Get A Second Chance at Prom

Senior prom isn’t limited to fresh-faced high school graduates. At the Livonia YMCA, the staff threw a prom for, well, actual seniors of the 50-and-up variety.

When you think “senior prom” you probably think of nervous young men and giggly young women, dressed to the nines and excited to be attending their last dance of high school.

But senior prom isn’t limited to high school seniors. The Livonia YMCA threw a “senior prom” for its 50-and-up members and guests from the community. They could dress up, have punch and cookies, dance, and generally have a nice time on a Saturday night. It may not have been as exciting as the first time around, but it was a chance for seniors to get together and enjoy a fun social event just for them.

“We do so many things for our young people and for families here, we wanted to focus on our seniors a little bit and give them a nice night out,” says Julie Allen, volunteer coordinator for the Livonia Y.

In a nice mix of young and old, live music was provided by the School of Rock in Farmington Hills by youth musicians just learning how to play their instruments and be in a band. Julie says everyone was very impressed with the talent of the young people.

Additional music was from DJ Knight ITM,  photos were provided by Photos Here and There and cookies were donated from Sorella’s and Community Alliance Credit Union. Punch supplies came from Kroger and Busch’s.

Julie says they’d like to try the event again next prom season, and make sure it’s clear it’s friendly to both those who come with their dream date and those who come single just to dance and have fun.
