Success on and off the court.
At the Y, children learn basic basketball skills using age-appropriate equipment (i.e. smaller balls and baskets for preschool ages). They do fun drills and games that teach ball handling and shooting skills. Early in the program, skill work is stressed as they practice, and as players develop, coaches work on the idea of team play and basic strategy.
Preschool Basketball
A great introduction to the game of basketball, where kids learn basketball skills like dribbling and shooting, but the main focus is getting them acclimated to working in a team setting with others. Our program uses age appropriate equipment and modified rules to help children be successful and develop properly.
Basketball League: 4- 5 – United Sports Little Dunkers
The United Sports League (through the Downriver Y and the City of Southgate) is a great way to learn new skills, be a part of a team, and have fun. Players will learn the basic fundamentals of dribbling, shooting, and passing and how to play together as a team. This age division is more of an introduction to the game of basketball. Teams meet each week for a 25-minute practice followed by a 25-minute scrimmage game (no score). Start times will fluctuate from week to week with either a 5:00 pm or 6:00 pm start time for each team. Parents will receive schedule information two weeks prior to the season starting

Youth Basketball
The coaches in our youth basketball clinics and instructional classes teach participants how to improve their dribbling, shooting, defensive, and team work skills. Youth clinics aim to build on and improve fundamentals while introducing more advanced skills.
YMCA basketball leagues emphasize good sportsmanship and skill development in a fun, safe setting. Players will continue improving on individual skills of the game, but much more important the program will teach them teamwork, persistence, and communication. Our Ys offer both Inter-Y leagues and community leagues, depending on location.

Join us this fall for a fun and inclusive basketball league. This recreational league will teach your child the fundamentals of basketball while also reinforcing off-court values such as teamwork, cooperation, good sportsmanship, and the YMCA core values of respect, responsibility, caring, honesty and inclusion!
Players will receive a branded jersey with reversible logo, a YMCA water bottle and cinch sack.
Logistics: This is an Intra-YMCA league, Teams will practice at the Birmingham YMCA. Games will take place on Saturday and will rotate each week between the Macomb YMCA, Boll YMCA, Farmington YMCA and the South Oakland YMCA.

Monday, October 7th: First week of practices (days will vary per team)

Join us this Winter for a fun and inclusive basketball league. This recreational league will teach your child the fundamentals of basketball while also reinforcing off-court values such as teamwork, cooperation, good sportsmanship, and the YMCA core values of respect, responsibility, caring, honesty and inclusion! Players will receive a jersey with reversible logo, one YMCA water bottle and cinch sack.
Logistics: Preschool teams will meet once per week for 30 minutes of practice and then play a 30 minute basketball game. This will happen at the Birmingham Family YMCA.
