Nothing is better than gymnastics, tumbling, and dance for helping kids to develop balance and coordination, plus the confidence that’s won as a child takes on new challenges. In Y Gymnastics, students are introduced to equipment, proper form and safety, and developmentally-appropriate gymnastics skills.
Preschool Gymnastics & Dance
No experience is necessary for this introduction to gymnastics for preschoolers. Students are introduced to equipment, proper form and safety, and basic gymnastics skills including forward and backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels and basic skills on equipment.
Ballet
Ballet at Downriver Family YMCA
This class introduces the essentials of ballet technique: developing strength and flexibility while exploring how dancers move. Working in class will improve fitness levels and coordination so that dancers can experiment with movement combinations and learn sequences of choreography.

Girls – pink tights, solid color leotard, and pink ballet shoes (ballet skirt is optional). Long hair in a bun. Short hair pulled back.

Creative Movement Dance (Preschool) at Boll Family YMCA
This class will provide a fun, safe and exciting environment for youth to learn basic ballet steps and creative movement while engaging in dance exercises. Children will learn how to express themselves better through Creative Movement and try new things!

No experience is necessary for this structured gymnastics experience. Gymnasts are introduced to equipment, proper form and safety while working on improving their gross motor skills. This Instructor lead class is Parent On-Demand in the YMCA to help your gymnast transition to an autonomous learning environment.
Parents must remain in the gymnasium on the benches to assist if necessary.

No experience necessary for this Parent/Child gymnastics exploration that builds your gymnast’s coordination, motor skills and core strength. This instructor lead class is parent hands-on to help your gymnast learn the principles of gymnastics. The use of select gymnastics equipment provides a fun, interesting and exciting learning environment for both parent and child.

Acro Gymnastics
Acro Gymnastics at Downriver Family YMCA
AcroDance is a progression based dance style that safely teaches strength, flexibility, balance, conditioning and tumbling within the art of dance. Taught by an Acrobatic Arts certified instructor, students will learn basic skills such as front rolls, cartwheels and bridges in a fun and creative way.

Gymnastics – Intermediate at Birmingham Family YMCA
The Intermediate Class is for gymnasts who have mastered the Beginner Class skills. This class is the next step in the BYG Development Program and introduces new skills with a continued focus on building fundamentals, strength, and flexibility.
Prerequisite: Proficient Beginner Class skills or speak with an Instructor for exceptions. Note: key skills will be evaluated on the first day of class to ensure gymnasts are enrolled in the most productive learning environment.

Hip Hop is a fast, high energy type of dance seen in music videos and commercials. Dance moves seen in performances by artists such as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber and J Lo would be typical examples of Hip Hop. In this class, students learn the necessary elements of jazz which are crucial to succeed in Hip Hop. Students will learn coordination, balance, and the ability to memorize routines. From one age level to the next, classes expand into more complex moves and routines.

Tap dance – Tap dance for kids is an exciting and rhythmic style of dance where performers use special shoes with metal taps on the heels and toes to create sound with their movements. As they tap their feet on the floor, kids produce various beats and rhythms, making it like playing music with their feet.
In tap dance classes for children, kids learn how to make different sounds by tapping, shuffling, and sliding their feet in time to music. It helps improve their coordination, timing, and rhythm. Tap dance also encourages creativity and self-expression as kids experiment with different rhythms and patterns. With its lively and fun nature, tap dance for kids allows them to enjoy both the art of dancing and the excitement of making music through movement!
