The Y gives kids opportunities for children to gain confidence as they recognize the Y as a place where they belong and can feel comfortable exploring new interests and passions. Our Ys provide STEAM enrichment programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) that build key skills needed for future leaders of tomorrow.

STEAM Programs for kids ages 4 & up
At our Ys, youth develop skills while building, programming and manipulating robots or building cranes, elevators, and amusement park rides.
Beginner Ballet
Beginner Ballet at Boll Family YMCA
Twirl, leap, and tiptoe into the magical world of ballet! In this beginner-friendly class, young dancers will learn basic ballet steps, positions, and simple routines—all while building balance, coordination, and confidence. With playful music, encouraging instruction, and plenty of room for creativity, this is the perfect place for kids to develop a love for dance in a fun, supportive setting. No previous dance experience needed—just bring your energy and imagination!

Beginner Poetry – Camp Edition
Beginner Poetry – Camp Edition at Downriver Family YMCA
Beginner Poetry class, kids ages 8–13 will explore the art of creative expression through fun and engaging poetry activities. From silly rhymes to meaningful messages, students will learn how to play with language, develop their own voice, and share their thoughts through poems. No experience needed—just an open mind and a love for imagination!

Bracelet Art – Camp Edition
Bracelet Art – Camp Edition at Downriver Family YMCA
Get creative and express your unique style in our Bracelet Making Art Class. Kids ages 6-13yrs will learn how to design and create their own custom bracelets using colorful beads, string and fun patterns. This hands-on class encourages creativity, fine motor skills and confidence – all while having fun with friends! All materials provided. No experience necessary – just bring your imagination!!

This is for former Y Arts Ceramics/Pottery Students only. If you have taken our 6 week Hand-building & Wheel Throwing class and you want to get back in the studio to create again you are invited to attend an open studio session! For $25/$30 (Y Member/Non-Member) you can get up to 5lbs of clay to work with (on the wheel or hand building) or glaze 2 pieces between 12pm-2:30pm! (If there is something else you have in mind email jessica.cooper@ymcadetroit.org and we can work something out)

Join us for this 6 session ceramics class! We will dive into the world of playing with dirt! Student will learn learn 3 major Hand Building techniques, and learn the basics of wheel throwing. Students will also have plenty of options to curate what they make to their own interests!
*No Class Memorial Day
The class will also offer two opportunities to come to Open Studio Time on Saturdays from 12-2:30 at no charge during the class.
*Some pieces may need to be picked up after the last class, pick up will be arranged at that time.

We’re cooking up fun for your kids! All kids ages 6-12 are invited to join us to create a new snack or food dish. Recipes change weekly to introduce youth to new foods and provide learning opportunities to practice new skills. Participants will learn how to use basic kitchen gadgets, small appliances (hand mixer, blender), practice measuring, blending, rolling, cutting, and layering. Participants will practice safe use of equipment, proper sanitary procedures, and will be encouraged to use manners.

Grace & Glow: Etiquette for Young Ladies (Ages 8–12) In this four-week course, meeting twice a week, girls ages 8–12 will explore the foundations of confidence, kindness, and class. Grace & Glow blends traditional etiquette with modern social skills to help young ladies shine in every setting—from the dinner table to the digital world. Through fun, hands-on activities, participants will learn: Personal presentation and posture, Writing thank-you notes, Respectful social media habits. Each session encourages poise, self-assurance, and celebrates each girl’s individuality. The course concludes with a charming tea party celebration, where participants can showcase their new skills in style!
