  • YMCA OF Metropolitan Detroit Names Helene Weir As New President & CEO

    The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit has named Helene Weir as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective February 1, 2019. Selected by
    the Y’s Board of Directors, following a three month search, Weir will succeed Scott Landry who will step down on January 31, 2019. In her new role, Weir will be responsible for building the Y’s capacity to ensure the future of its mission and to respond to emerging needs.

    “During our search for a new CEO, we vetted candidates from throughout the country but Helene stood out,” commented David Allen, Search Committee Chair. “Her energy and vision for the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit is exactly what we were looking for in a leader. With Helene’s experience in philanthropy and large YMCAs and passion towards the core values of the YMCA, we are convinced that the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit will have fantastic leadership for years to come.”

    “I look forward to joining the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit team and to the next chapter in its rich history,” said Weir. “I started as a YMCA program director and am proud that my YMCA career has allowed me to merge mission and philanthropy to impact communities.”

    Weir comes to the Y with 35 years of experience in the non-profit world, most recently served as Vice President, working within the Large YMCA Resources department of the YMCA of the USA. She and the Large YMCA Resources team were responsible for supporting YMCAs so that they could maintain long term sustainability, evolving relevance and community impact. Prior to the YMCA of the USA, Weir served as
    President and CEO at YMCA Calgary, CEO of the Westport Weston Family YMCA in Westport, CT, and Senior Vice President of Operations at the Valley of the Sun YMCA in Phoenix, AZ. Weir holds a BA and a BEd from Acadia University and Certificate in Non-Profit Leadership & Management from Arizona State University.

  • Corsan Challenge winners Grosse Point Sailfish featured on WXYZ!

    Every year, swim teams around the metro area compete in the Corsan Challenge to see who can raise the most money for Detroit Swims. This year, the Grosse Point Sailfish raised the most money, and received a swim clinic with Olympic gold medalist Peter Vanderkaay!

  • Y Arts Rockin’ Art Bash Featured in Detroit News

    Y Arts, the arts and humanities branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, is hosting the Rockin’ Art Bash on Nov. 26. The benefit will include a screening of “Louder Than Love — The Grande Ballroom Story,” an Emmy-winning documentary produced by Detroit native Tony D’Annunzio. The film focuses on the 1960s Detroit rock scene and how bands such as MC5, Iggy & The Stooges and Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes got started.

    There’s lots of good reasons to attend a fundraiser for Y Arts, the arts and humanities branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. Of course, it’s an opportunity to support an important arts organization. But if that’s not enough of an incentive, this year’s theme, “Y Arts’ Rockin’ Art Bash,” promises to be a thrill for fans of ’60s rock music.
