Summer Day Camp
At Y Summer Day Camp, kids make new friends, accomplish goals and learn new skills, and experience belonging in a way that only the Y can provide. Every new experience comes with a chance to learn and grow. At the Y, we strive to give every child and teen opportunities to test their own limits and explore their potential.

Committed to Keeping You Informed
The Birmingham Family YMCA concluded operations on April 30, 2026, with the exception of summer camp, which will continue June 15 through August 21, 2026.
We know this is difficult news to receive. We share it with care, transparency, and deep gratitude for a community that has meant so much to generations of families, members, and staff.
In 2023, the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit sold the Birmingham Family YMCA building to the City of Birmingham. This decision followed years of mounting deferred maintenance combined with lasting financial impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. While either challenge alone may have been manageable, together they made it impossible to sustain the facility at the level our members deserve.
Following the sale, we explored the possibility of a new, shared YMCA facility in partnership with the City of Birmingham and NEXT. While the vision was inspiring, the resources needed to move forward were not available within the required timeline.
We recognize how deeply this news may affect our members and the broader community. This decision was not made lightly, and it is not the outcome anyone hoped for. The Birmingham Family YMCA has touched thousands of lives, and its impact will always remain part of our Y story. We are profoundly grateful to the members, volunteers, donors, and staff who made this YMCA such a special place.

The Birmingham Family YMCA closed due to a combination of long-term facility challenges and financial impacts that made continued operation unsustainable. Deferred maintenance needs, combined with lasting effects from the COVID-19 pandemic, limited our ability to operate the building at the standard our members deserve. This decision was not made lightly and followed years of exploration, planning, and partnership efforts.
Any Birmingham memberships that were not transferred by May 1, 2026 were automatically terminated. No action is required if you do not wish to transfer to another location. You may still receive a free month of membership if you reactivate your membership by September 1st.
You may stop by or call the Welcome Center at any YMCA location, or email us at branch-questions@ymcadetroit.org for assistance.
Yes. Summer Day Camp will run as scheduled from June 15 through August 21, 2026. Camp families will receive separate, detailed communication specific to camp operations, schedules, and logistics.
