Swim Lessons & Water Safety Education
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to swim. The YMCA offers both free and affordable swim lessons designed to keep everyone in our community safe around water, from infants aged six weeks to adults.
- FREE Swim Lessons: We partner with local organizations like the Huron Clinton Metroparks Authority (HCMA) and run the Detroit Swims initiative to provide free water safety programs to qualifying youth (ages 4-14) and adults. Please note: Due to high demand, free swim lessons fill rapidly, often within minutes of registration opening.
- Affordable Swim Lessons: We offer low-cost, progressive swimming instruction year-round. Plus, YMCA members receive priority registration and discounts on all session registrations.

Youth Competitive Swim Teams
Take your skills to the next level with our youth swim teams. The YMCA competitive swim program focuses on stroke technique, physical endurance, teamwork, and personal goal-setting in a supportive environment.
- Who it’s for: Swimmers (typically ages 5-18) who can demonstrate basic proficiency in front crawl and backstroke.
- Why join: Participants experience both individual growth and team camaraderie, competing in local and regional YMCA swim meets.
