The Farmington Family YMCA celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Tuesday, May 12. Sponsored by Botsford Hospital, the event brought together key individuals in the community to reminisce about the Y’s past half century of service, as well as announce current and future initiatives.

Laura Perlowski, the current Executive Director of the Farmington Y, explained that the Farmington YMCA is currently serving 10,000 members in the community through quality programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility both in the branch and throughout the area. For example, the Farmington Y currently provides childcare for more than 800 children at 14 schools in the Greater Farmington area.

Previous Executive Directors of the Farmington Y were recognized at the event, including Dave Comfort, 1965-1972, Gary Unruh, who served from 1972 to 1981; Kevin Bush, who served from 1982 to 1997; and Rick Durei, who served from 1998 to 2012.  Chuck Law, who was instrumental in establishing the Farmington Y, and Rose Berberian, the first ever program director, were also in attendance.
