Rev. Anthony Bowen, a freed slave, founded the first “YMCA for Colored Men and Boys” in 1853. In 1867 E.V.C Eato, president of New York’s Black YMCA, was the first African American delegate sent to the International YMCA Convention in Montreal, CA. William A. Hunton became the first, full-time paid director of the Black YMCA in Norfolk, VA in 1888. Violet P. Henry was the first woman named to a senior management position with the American national YMCA in 1976. Dr. David Epperson was the first African American YMCA World Service Worker Fellowship recipient and the first African American elected Chairman of the National Board of Directors for the YMCA of the USA. Kevin Washington became the 14th person and first African American to serve as the President and CEO of the YMCA of the USA in 2015.
