2025 Annual Report
Rooted in Belonging
To Our YMCA Family and Community,
The past year has been one of extraordinary transformation and renewed purpose for the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. As we reflect on our collective journey, we are filled with immense gratitude for the resilience of our staff, the passion of our volunteers, and the unwavering support of our donors. Together, we have proven that we are truly Stronger Together.
Growth Fueled by Community
Our strategic focus is already yielding remarkable results. Driven by a historic surge of over 1,400 new member units, the YMCA achieved its first operating net income since the COVID-19 pandemic. This fiscal stability represents a revitalized community presence and the resources necessary to deepen our mission. Our Philanthropy team echoed this success, surpassing our annual campaign goal by raising over $1.1 million, ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of someone belonging to our family. Furthering this momentum, the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit was awarded a three year $7 million grant from Ballmer Group in July 2025. This investment is a powerful vote of confidence in our vision to build resilient youth and strong communities, especially in neighborhoods where opportunity has been out of reach for far too long.
Impact Where It Matters Most
Our mission lives in the stories of the over 60,000 youth and families we served across four counties. From the vital water safety skills taught through Detroit Swims to the $52,290 raised to provide Fresh Baskets for 500 families, the Y showed up exactly where we were needed. We are particularly proud that 75% of our outreach engaged, connected, or impacted residents in Detroit and Wayne County, strengthening the bonds of belonging in our most underserved neighborhoods.
A Future Built Together
As we look forward, we remain committed to removing barriers and increasing opportunities. Whether it was the Birmingham YMCA celebrating diversity during Welcoming Week or the Boll Family YMCA hosting over 200 teens for Friday Night Live, we are proving that when people feel they belong, they achieve more than they ever thought possible. Thank you for being part of this journey. Because of you, the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit is not just a building—it is a place for all.

A Vision Rooted in Belonging
At the heart of everything we do is a single, powerful idea: Belonging. We believe the Y should be a vibrant hub where everyone, regardless of background, can connect, grow, and reach their full potential. This year, we brought that belief to life by launching our new strategic plan. The plan’s five strategic priorities are designed to weave belonging into the very fabric of our region.
Prioritizing Youth & Family Engagement
The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit expanded opportunities for youth and families across the region through programs that strengthened confidence, leadership, enrichment, and connection. From academic achievement and youth sports to camps, arts, and mentorship, branches and initiatives created spaces where young people could grow, thrive, and feel they belong.
Key Achievements
- Metro Youth YMCA achieved a 100% graduation rate for the Achievers Class of 2025, with one senior earning more than $1 million in scholarship support.
- Y Learning Centers emphasized youth confidence-building through STEM learning and empowerment where 70% of youth felt safe and had fun learning something new.
- YMCA Positive Play Initiative served 6,828 youth, representing 50% growth year over year, while increasing sports participation rates among participants to 65%.
- Detroit Swims exceeded youth participation goals and expanded water safety access across Metro Detroit.
- The Bosch Community Fund awarded the Farmington Family YMCA $22,848 to help remove barriers to participation and ensure more children could access enriching STEM opportunities.
- Camp Nissokone celebrated its highest overnight camp enrollment we have on record, totaling 736 camper weeks—an 11% growth increase over last year.

Prioritizing Mental Health at Day Camp
To ensure all 2,809 kids at Summer Day Camp had the support they needed to thrive, each camp had a dedicated Behavior Specialist on staff. Working under the guidance of the Senior Behavior and Mental Health Director, specialists provided one-on-one counseling and implemented Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activities to help campers navigate personal, behavioral, and psychological challenges. By modeling positive intervention strategies for camp counselors, facilitating vital resources for families, and maintaining daily crisis-intervention support, our Behavior Specialists fostered inclusive, empathetic environments where every camper could build authentic relationships and succeed.
Expanding Health & Well-Being
Across Metro Detroit, the YMCA strengthened individual and community well-being by expanding access to health focused programs, food security initiatives, recreation, and supportive services. The Y’s holistic approach to spirit, mind, and body helped individuals and families improve their health while building meaningful connections.
Key Achievements
- Carls Family YMCA celebrated its 9th cohort of cancer survivors completing LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.
- South Oakland Family YMCA launched LIVESTRONG at the YMCA in partnership with Birmingham Family YMCA, expanding support for cancer survivors.
- Community Initiatives raised more than $52,000 through the Fresh Baskets campaign, serving 500 families, including more than 1,000 children.
- Macomb Family YMCA expanded our Rock Steady Boxing program, a non-contact boxing-inspired fitness program that helps people living with Parkinson’s improve strength, mobility, confidence, and independence.
- YMCA Positive Play Initiative increased access to safe play opportunities and distributed sports kits to more than 200 youth.
- South Oakland Family YMCA experienced record-breaking membership growth as more families chose the Y as a place for health, connection, and support.

Commemorating 20 years on Broadway
What started in 2005 as a vision for a catalyst of community development, the Boll Family YMCA has become downtown Detroit’s coveted destination where where households from every neighborhood and walk of life come together for movement and mentorship, camaraderie and care.
To celebrate this milestone, we gathered 20 honorees: members and staff, donors and volunteers, parents and kids, lifters and learners. Some have been here since day one. Others are just beginning their Y journey. Woven together, their stories compose the tapestry that is our Boll Family YMCA community.
Investing in People & Culture
The YMCA deepened its commitment to creating a culture where staff, volunteers, members, and communities feel welcomed, connected, and valued. Through leadership development, inclusion initiatives, volunteer engagement, and intentional community-building, the Y strengthened a culture rooted in belonging.
Key Achievements
- Human Resources launched Association Round Up, creating a welcoming onboarding experience that connected new staff across the association.
- We implemented the first employee engagement survey in several years to establish a baseline for future staff satisfaction and culture initiatives.
- Staff development efforts included resume and interview coaching for day camp staff preparing for future career opportunities.
- Carls Family YMCA expanded volunteer leadership with 18 engaged board members.
- Camp Nissokone and Camp Ohiyesa welcomed staff from 16 countries around the world, which enriched our camps with diversity, talent, and cultural exchange. Seasonal staff retention at camp reached a 25-year high, reflecting the great progress towards staff culture, and seasonal staff engagement.

The Exchange: Empowering Teaching Artists Across Michigan
On November 21, Y Arts hosted The Exchange, a one-day professional development summit to support, connect, and inspire teaching artists from across Michigan. Created for both emerging and experienced creative educators, the event provided accessible, high-quality learning opportunities for artists working with youth and adults in a variety of artistic disciplines. Thanks to support from the Erb Family Foundation, the summit remained affordable and accessible to participants statewide.
Elevating Brand Familiarity & Visibility
The YMCA increased its visibility and strengthened community awareness with new partnerships and by showing up in neighborhoods, community events, and public spaces throughout Metro Detroit. Through these efforts, more individuals and families experienced the Y as a trusted and welcoming community resource.
Key Achievements
- Our Welcoming Week celebration elevated awareness of the Y’s global mission and commitment to inclusion.
- Community Initiatives expanded neighborhood-based outreach through Y on the Fly, Fresh Baskets, Detroit Swims, and Y Arts programming.
- Y Learning Centers strengthened community partnerships and communications efforts.

STRONGER TOGETHER: Expanding the YMCA’s Reach in Metro Detroit
Together with Brogan & Partners, we launched the Stronger Together campaign to inspire more Metro Detroit residents to join the YMCA community as members, staff, and advocates. Working alongside Robin Schwartz PR, we also expanded community awareness of the YMCA’s impact across the region.
Through strategic media outreach, the campaign generated more than 17 television and radio stories highlighting how the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit strengthens individuals, families, and communities every day. These stories amplified the Y’s mission, increased visibility across Metro Detroit, and helped attract new members and team members to the YMCA family.
Welcoming Week: Connecting Communities Through Culture, Art, and Play
On September 20, we hosted a Welcoming Week celebration that brought families, neighbors, and community partners together through cultural performances, global activities, sports, art, and food. Highlights included performances by the Oceanic Student Association and a steel drum band, henna art, a silent disco, international games and snacks, and a collaborative “mosaic of belonging” mural.
Participants gained meaningful cultural insights, including learning about Samoan traditions and the origins of henna, while engaging in conversations that reinforced the Y as a welcoming hub for all. The celebration also sparked a new partnership with the Oceanic Student Association at the University of Michigan, creating opportunities for future cultural exchange and youth learning experiences.

Ensuring Organizational Impact
The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit strengthened its long-term sustainability through financial growth, strategic partnerships, philanthropy, grant funding, and operational excellence. These efforts expanded the Y’s ability to serve communities today while building a stronger foundation for the future.
