To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Boll Family YMCA, we’ve gathered 20 honorees: members and staff, donors and volunteers, parents and kids, lifters and learners. Woven together, their stories compose the tapestry that is our Boll Family YMCA community. This is Adeeba’s Story.

As long as I have been a member, the Boll YMCA has been a consistent pillar in the Detroit community. They have worked to incorporate health, wellness and fitness for all ages. Over the years, the YMCA has offered a wide range of programs, including Detroit Swims, artist feature displays, media and summer camps, holiday pop-ups, ceramic classes, fresh produce days, community fitness programs at Beacon Park, family Halloween party, and many more. These programs support and uplift not only YMCA members, but the surrounding Detroit community.

First, the group fitness classes at Boll YMCA have been a life saving tool for me. As I recuperated from a major health scare in 2014, the group classes helped me to regain my health and set me on a path of consistent exercise and better health. I have also formed many lasting friendships with other YMCA members!

There are too many good memories to pick just one. Some of my highlights include cheering at swim meets, swimming my first full lap during adult swim lessons with my friend Tiffany and reuniting with my group fitness class buddies after the COVID-19 shutdown.

It is more than just a gym – it’s a supportive community where I can train, grow and stay motivated with a positive atmosphere and encouraging people.
