After my time in the military, I was looking for a local gym and discovered the downtown YMCA. I was immediately impressed by its diverse community.
Why is the YMCA important to the Detroit community?
The YMCA connects and is important to the Detroit community with services and programs like summer day camp, Farmers’ Market stands, active older adult exercise classes and more.
How has the YMCA impacted your life personally?
The YMCA has greatly impacted and enriched my life through the many friendships that I have made. Additionally, I am currently recovering from two major back surgeries. Being at the YMCA helped me work back to 90% of what I was lifting pre-operation. The thing I appreciate most is there was no judgment at the YMCA for a man to work out using only a 10-pound dumbbell.
What’s your favorite memory from your time at the YMCA?
Every day at the YMCA is joyous for me. I get there at 6 a.m. on most days – the morning crew knows each other. I always leave it regenerated. Even though I like to work out hard, a lot of people refer to me, playfully, as the Y’s social director.
In one sentence, what does the YMCA mean to you?
The YMCA helps bodies, minds and souls stay healthy.
If you had to describe the YMCA community in three words, what would they be?
Family. Friends. Fun.
