To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Boll Family YMCA, we’ve gathered 20 honorees: members and staff, donors and volunteers, parents and kids, lifters and learners. Woven together, their stories compose the tapestry that is our Boll Family YMCA community. This is Reid’s Story.

The Y, with its diversity of programs, brings people of all ages and interests together. When people come to know one another, there is much less apprehension about one’s differences and more attention is given to what people have in common.

I was a Y professional staff member for almost 50 years. My three children grew up in Y childcare; I met my wife at the Y; my kids worked at the Y during the school year as well as in the summer. Most of the friends I have in my life are either people I worked with at the Y or those I met through my work there!

My favorite memory from my time at the Y includes all the volunteers and staff I had the privilege to work with at or through the Y. Three people who stood out during my time at the Detroit Y are John Marshall of the Kresge Foundation and John and Marlene Boll. Coincidentally, these are also the three people who contributed immensely to the Boll Y becoming a reality.

The Y means “hope”, bringing people who care together to work on issues, projects, problems, and more that make a positive difference in the community.
