For 65 years, the Birmingham Family YMCA has been a cornerstone of this community, supporting residents of all ages at 400 E. Lincoln. Our commitment to strengthening the Birmingham community remains unwavering, and we’re sharing an exciting update on the development of a potential new facility in partnership with the City of Birmingham alongside the Next organization.
On October 28, the City Commission took a critical step forward by approving a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the final design of a new building, projected to be between 44,500 and 50,000 square feet, with a maximum project cost of $32 million. This facility will be a community-driven space designed to support expanded Next and YMCA programming and shared spaces for gatherings and activities—ensuring the Y continues to be a vital resource for Birmingham.
As the owner, the City of Birmingham is currently working with both the YMCA and Next to outline occupancy terms. Your support as a Birmingham YMCA member will be essential in garnering community support for this initiative.
We are committed to keeping you informed and encourage your engagement as we work to shape a facility that reflects the values and needs of our community. Please stay tuned for updates on the project’s progress, and consider joining us at upcoming City Commission meetings to show your support.
