2023 Annual Report

2023 – a Year of Evolution, Transitions and Notable Accolades

Thanks to the collective efforts of loyal staff, members, and volunteers, our YMCA experienced the highest membership growth in over a decade. We ended the year with over 10,000 memberships, serving nearly 50,000 Metropolitan Detroiters.

YMCA membership is not about being a part of a club. It is rooted in community building. It is about connecting people on their health and wellness journey, a journey that is physical, mental, and spiritual. Our ultimate goal is to help everyone make every day better by realizing their unique potential. Today we celebrate the health journey of over 50,000 of our neighbors.

2023 was truly a year of evolution and notable accolades for the YMCA, a testament to our unwavering commitment to our mission. The evolution began and ended the year and was pivotal in propelling our mission forward, aiming to build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Evolution and accolades were focused on safety, quality, and leadership.

Safety, flexibility, and sustainability were key drivers in our decision to become an American Red Cross-licensed Training Provider in 2023. As such, we adopted American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/CPR, First Aid, and AED Training for our associations’ aquatic programs. In addition, we provide an array of safety courses in partnership with the Red Cross in AED use, Babysitting, CPR, and Lifeguarding. We are proud that 100% of our more than 100 lifeguards are Red Cross certified. We applaud Amanda Barone, Regional Director of Aquatics, and our entire aquatics team for this accomplishment.

Volunteer leadership is a bedrock of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. We have engaged community members to lead our YMCA for over 171 years. In April 2023, we elected Eric Huffman as the 58th Chair of the Board, a significant milestone as he became the first African American to hold this post. Eric’s career, which began as a State Farm claims manager and advanced to an agent owner, spans over 27 years of serving the metropolitan Detroit community. His dedication to the YMCA was recognized when he was honored as a YMCA Achiever in 2010, and he has continued to contribute as a volunteer ever since as a mentor and major donor.

We celebrated the conclusion of our Revitalize and Thrive Campaign, which raised over 10 million dollars to help the YMCA make a transformational impact on our youth, families, and communities for generations to come… focused on areas that support education, youth leadership, safety around water, the arts, and nutrition.

Ensuring that our children are safe is the priority of our YMCA. So, we rolled up ourselves to pursue the prestigious Praesidium Accreditation for Child Safety. We earned the Praesidium Accreditation for Child Safety which publicly recognizes the YMCA for adopting and employing the highest standards in child abuse prevention across our entire association. We are truly grateful to Lisa Mullin, Vice-President of Human Resources and Risk Management, and our whole human resources team for leading our YMCA through the necessary rigor to earn this accreditation.

Delivering quality youth programs is core to our YMCA’s mission. This is best demonstrated through community-driven accolades. We earned the Best of Best Community Choice Award for Summer Camp. Thousands of community members agreed that our YMCA summer camp provided children with high-quality educational, fun, and safe summer experiences. Every Year, the Detroit Free Press hosts this community recognition, and we are honored to be recognized.

We have even garnered national accolades for program quality; Newsweek identified our Camp Ohiyesa as one of the top 100 camps in the nation. Located in Holly, Michigan, Camp Ohiyesa provides amazing outdoor fun and learning opportunities for all ages.

Yes, the YMCA serves all ages from cradle to career and through our retirement years. However, it is no secret that children are the heartbeat of the YMCA. Over 20,000 children are served annually through recreational and educational activities, from swim lessons to summer employment. In addition, we provided over 86,000 meals to children and seniors. Please take some time to read through the stories from our branches and initiatives to learn more about the people the Y supported in 2023.

We closed out the new year with the ultimate leadership transition: Helene Weir retired as the 14th President and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit after serving the YMCA movement in Canada and the United States for 40 years. Helene was the first female to hold this post in a permanent capacity. Our leadership development committee conducted a nationwide search and elected Parrish Underwood as the 15th President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. Parrish is the first African American to serve in this role with this YMCA. He has a 31-year YMCA career history serving in leadership roles in Alabama, Georgia, and Michigan.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit continues to progress forward.

2023 Financial Update

Michelle

Michelle Kotas
Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer

2023 was an incredible year for growth: 24% growth in membership dues and 14% growth in program fees. This was the highest membership growth our association has experienced in the past decade. While we celebrate this incredible achievement; it is tempered by the increased costs in operations and a net operating loss. The good news is our loss was lower than budgeted and we are growing. We look forward to the future.

Community Initiatives

Lynette

Lynette Simmons
Vice President of Operations – Community Initiatives

Community Initiatives raised over 3.1 million dollars to provide equitable access to free and/or low-cost quality YMCA programs, services and support systems. Through food access, supervised sports sampling and play in an array of spaces, community water safety skills and swim lessons, the Arts-visual-theater-Media, High school completion and career/college readiness, to more than 16,000 residents consisting of youth, adults and families. While we serve 4 counties in the Metropolitan area, over 75% of the individuals we support are Detroit residents. We are proud to remove socioeconomic barriers through collective impact efforts that improve the lives and contribute to the aspirations and success of our most vulnerable community members.

Facilities

Lorie

Lorie Uranga
Senior Vice President of Properties and Purchasing

Maintenance was our primary facility focus in 2023, ensuring that our YMCA was safe and clean. Over $400,000 was spent on parking lot resurfacing, roofing, and mechanical updates for heating, cooling, elevators, etc. Our YMCA is responsible for seven facilities and two camps, which is more than 367,000 square feet of real estate we are charged with managing every day.

Human Resources & Risk Management

Lisa

Lisa Mullin
Vice President of Human Resources and Risk Management

People are our most valuable asset. Our staff and volunteers enable the YMCA to create welcoming safe places for everyone. Our amazing staff engage our communities with a smile and the goal for making the Y the best part of peoples day. With thousands of children in our care on any given day, our commitment to safety is always evident, including implementing a real-time sex offender screening process at all of our facilities. This commitment to safety is why we also took on the arduous task to earn the Praesidium Accreditation for Child Safety. In addition we also became an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/CPR, First Aid, and AED Training Partner.

Marketing & Communications

Latitia

Latitia McCree-Thomas
Senior Vice President of Communications & Marketing

Telling the YMCA story and sharing the impact the YMCA has in the lives of Metropolitan Detroiters is our ultimate aim. We achieve this through multimedia marketing including: digital, print, radio, television, and strategic incentives to attract families and individual health-seekers, volunteers, partners and donors to the YMCA. YMCA web traffic, social media engagement, and foot traffic help drive significant membership growth, program growth, and philanthropic support. We focused on the value of the YMCA, sharing ALL the services and benefits the Y offers for less than $3 a day.

Membership & Programming

Kyle

Kyle Anderson
Vice President of Operations – Membership

Membership and programs experienced historical growth. We attribute this growth to heightened awareness, post-COVID alumni returning, and improved program quality and consistency. Newsweek even recognized Camp Ohiyesa among the top 100 camps in the nation. We provide Les Mills group exercise programs, child watch, parents night out and family gym and swim at all locations at one affordable price. We welcomed thousands of new members and ended the year with over 10,000 new memberships, providing YMCA access to over 50,000 men, women, and children across the metropolitan area. We are truly excited to become the third place for families outside of home, work, and school.
