The YMCA is what’s possible when people work together and consistently evolve in their efforts to provide a safe, fun, respectful and welcoming place.
Why is the YMCA important to the Detroit community?
The Y is an accessible, relaxed and ever-evolving place for people of all ages to enjoy and engage in a wide range of activities, individually or in community with each other.
How has the YMCA impacted your life personally?
It has been a steady constant in our lives for fun and support since coming to Detroit amidst many changes in our lives, especially becoming parents. One of our closest friends works for Y, and she’s helped open our eyes to opportunities, including memorable summer camp experiences for our boys.
What’s your favorite memory from your time at the YMCA?
Our favorite memories are in the pool. The weightlessness of the pool when Heather was eight months pregnant was a much needed relief. It was followed by parent-baby swim lessons for both boys. Randal even took swim lessons to increase his water safety! More recently, we proudly watched our youngest son master all four strokes after completing every swim class available at the Y and then successfully try out for a Detroit-based travel swim team full of confidence and joy.
In one sentence, what does the YMCA mean to you?
The YMCA is what’s possible when people work together and consistently evolve in their efforts to provide a safe, fun, respectful and welcoming place along with programm ing for people of all ages and interests.
If you had to describe the YMCA community in three words, what would they be?
Steady. Fun. Welcoming
