Thanks to a group of families from the I Rise-Family Empowerment Program, a Detroit neighborhood now has several new trees to enjoy, and the families themselves have the satisfaction of making the community a more pleasant place to be. The tree planting happened through a community service even with the Greening of Detroit.

Prospective members can donate a backpack, lunchbox or other essential school supplies to the YMCA and join for $25 through Aug. 31. Donation stay in the local communities in each branch and help children in need, including those who have left their homes due to domestic violence.

Around 150 lucky day campers from the South Oakland Y got to participate in a pro camp held by Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, thanks to a generous donation from Meijer and Proctor and Gamble.

Thanks to generous donors, the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign came in well over its goal and hit a four-year high in dollars raised. But beyond the numbers are people who are helped by the campaign; families, children and seniors who are able to be part of the YMCA. Here’s just one of their stories.

For the first time, the YMCA of Detroit presented the John Copeland Award for Civility and Community Service not to an individual, but to an entire family: the Vanderkaays. A new exhibit at the Boll Family YMCA’s Lobby Gallery called “The Art of Transformation” aims to show us the humanity inside men struggling with addiction. It showcases the work of men who are clients of Mariners Inn created through the Mariners Inn art therapy program.

At participating Metro Detroit Dunkin’ Donuts stores tomorrow (May 21) you can get a delicious small iced coffee for 31 cents. And for each one sold, Dunkin’ Donuts will donate 31 cents to the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.

More than 30 talented playwrights submitted their work for a chance to be included in the inaugural 10-Minute Play Festival hosted by Y Arts. The five that made the cut will be presented Saturday at 3 p.m., with staged reading of each play and a talkback by the playwrights afterward. Admission is free.
