A uniquely Detroit exhibit is at the Boll Family YMCA Lobby Gallery this month, marking the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It’s based around a book from the late Free Press photographer Tony Spina of images he’d taken while covering Kennedy over the years.

Thanks to a group of families from the I Rise-Family Empowerment Program, a Detroit neighborhood now has several new trees to enjoy, and the families themselves have the satisfaction of making the community a more pleasant place to be. The tree planting happened through a community service even with the Greening of Detroit.

Prospective members can donate a backpack, lunchbox or other essential school supplies to the YMCA and join for $25 through Aug. 31. Donation stay in the local communities in each branch and help children in need, including those who have left their homes due to domestic violence.

Thanks to generous donors, the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign came in well over its goal and hit a four-year high in dollars raised. But beyond the numbers are people who are helped by the campaign; families, children and seniors who are able to be part of the YMCA. Here’s just one of their stories.

For the first time, the YMCA of Detroit presented the John Copeland Award for Civility and Community Service not to an individual, but to an entire family: the Vanderkaays.
