| Dear Birmingham Family YMCA Member,As promised, we are writing to keep you informed about the future of the Birmingham Family YMCA. We know this update carries difficult news, and we want to share it with care, transparency, and gratitude for the community that has meant so much to all of us. Overview In 2023, the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit sold the Birmingham Family YMCA building, located at 400 E. Lincoln, Birmingham, MI 48009, to the City of Birmingham. This decision reflected an unfortunate convergence of factors, including mounting deferred maintenance and the lasting financial challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. While either issue in isolation could have been addressed, together they significantly limited our ability to sustain the building in a way that meets the standards our members and community deserve.Following the sale, we explored developing a new, shared facility in partnership with the City of Birmingham and NEXT. While this vision was inspiring, the resources needed to bring it to life were not available within the required timeline. Permanent Closure After careful consideration, the Birmingham Family YMCA located at 400 E. Lincoln, Birmingham, MI 48009, will permanently close April 30, 2026.We recognize how deeply this news affects our members and the broader community. This was not a decision made lightly, and it is not the outcome anyone hoped for. Programs and Services Programs and services will continue as scheduled through March 31, 2026. Some services may be reduced depending on staff availability, and we will communicate any changes as they arise.From April 1 through April 30, 2026, the wellness center and pool will remain open. No additional classes will be offered during this final month. Summer Day Camp We are planning to offer a Summer Day Camp in 2026. Once details are finalized, we will share more information with you. With Gratitude We understand the sadness and sense of loss this brings. The Birmingham Family YMCA has touched the lives of thousands of children, teens, adults, and families over the years, and its impact will always be part of our Y story.We are deeply grateful to our members, volunteers, donors, and staff who have made this YMCA such a special place. In appreciation of your loyalty, current Birmingham Family YMCA members will receive one free month of membership at any of our six YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit locations if you transfer your membership by September 1, 2026.
