Committed to Keeping You Informed

The Birmingham Family YMCA will conclude operations on April 30, 2026, with the exception of summer camp, which will continue June 15 through August 21, 2026.

We know this is difficult news to receive. We share it with care, transparency, and deep gratitude for a community that has meant so much to generations of families, members, and staff.

In 2023, the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit sold the Birmingham Family YMCA building to the City of Birmingham. This decision followed years of mounting deferred maintenance combined with lasting financial impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. While either challenge alone may have been manageable, together they made it impossible to sustain the facility at the level our members deserve.
Following the sale, we explored the possibility of a new, shared YMCA facility in partnership with the City of Birmingham and NEXT. While the vision was inspiring, the resources needed to move forward were not available within the required timeline.

What to Expect in the Months Ahead

  • Programs and services will continue as scheduled through March 31, 2026.
  • Some services and hours may be adjusted based on staffing, and any changes will be communicated as they arise via email on file.
  • April 1–30, 2026 will be a final transition period. During this time, basic amenities will remain available, but no programs will be offered.

We recognize how deeply this news may affect our members and the broader community. This decision was not made lightly, and it is not the outcome anyone hoped for. The Birmingham Family YMCA has touched thousands of lives, and its impact will always remain part of our Y story. We are profoundly grateful to the members, volunteers, donors, and staff who made this YMCA such a special place.

Membership Transfers & Continued Connection

To thank you for your loyalty, current Birmingham Family YMCA members who transfer their membership by September 1, 2026 will receive one free month of membership at any YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit locations:

  • South Oakland Family YMCA – Royal Oak
  • Farmington Family YMCA – Farmington Hills
  • Boll Family YMCA – Detroit
  • Southgate Family YMCA – Southgate
  • Macomb Family YMCA – Mt. Clemens
  • Carls Family YMCA – Milford

While this chapter is coming to a close, our commitment to you and to strengthening communities remains strong. We hope you will continue your YMCA journey with us at one of our other locations. Thank you for being part of the Birmingham Family YMCA and for all you have meant to our Y community.

Frequently Asked Questions & Support

We understand this news may bring questions and emotions. Please review the Frequently Asked Questions below for more information. If you have additional questions not addressed there, you may contact us using the contact form below.

The Birmingham Family YMCA is closing due to a combination of long-term facility challenges and financial impacts that made continued operation unsustainable. Deferred maintenance needs, combined with lasting effects from the COVID-19 pandemic, limited our ability to operate the building at the standard our members deserve. This decision was not made lightly and followed years of exploration, planning, and partnership efforts.

The Birmingham Family YMCA will conclude regular operations on April 30, 2026. Summer Day Camp will continue as planned from June 15 through August 21, 2026. Following the conclusion of Summer Day Camp, the YMCA will vacate the building.

Members are encouraged to transfer their membership to another YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit location. As a thank-you for your loyalty, members who transfer by September 1, 2026 will receive one free month of membership at their new location. Our team is here to help make this transition as smooth as possible. You may stop by or call the Welcome Center at any YMCA location, or email us at branch-questions@ymcadetroit.org for assistance.

All unused personal training sessions will be honored. Members may complete sessions prior to April 30, 2026, or transfer remaining sessions to another YMCA location when available. Any sessions that cannot be completed or transferred will be refunded. Please connect directly with your trainer to make a plan.

Yes. Summer Day Camp will run as scheduled from June 15 through August 21, 2026. Camp families will receive separate, detailed communication specific to camp operations, schedules, and logistics.

The final membership draft for Birmingham memberships will occur in March 2026. Members will continue to have access to the Birmingham YMCA through April 30, 2026.

Any Birmingham memberships that have not been transferred by May 1, 2026 will be automatically terminated. No action is required if you do not wish to transfer. You may still receive a free month of membership if you reactivate your membership by September 1st.

Our staff have made a lasting impact on this community, and expressions of gratitude mean a great deal. Cards, notes, and personal messages are always welcome and deeply appreciated.

We understand the desire to gather, reflect, and say goodbye together. A Birmingham YMCA Legacy Event is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 6:00 PM. Details are still being finalized and will be shared once confirmed.

Our priority is supporting staff through this transition. The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit is committed to helping staff explore opportunities at other YMCA locations whenever possible and to supporting them with care, respect, and transparency throughout the process.

After the building sale, the YMCA explored the possibility of a new shared facility in partnership with the City of Birmingham and NEXT. While the vision was exciting, the resources needed to move forward were not available within the required timeline. At this time, there are no plans for a new YMCA facility in Birmingham.

We share the community’s hope to remain connected to the building and explored many possibilities in partnership with the City of Birmingham and NEXT. While we welcome opportunities to collaborate, we do not currently have the resources needed to sustainably operate or maintain the facility—even in a limited capacity. For that reason, there are no plans at this time for the YMCA to remain in the building.

Operating a full YMCA facility requires staffing and infrastructure that extend beyond the lease term alone. Ending regular operations on April 30 allows us to responsibly wind down services, support members and staff through the transition and continue Summer Day Camp programming.

No. This outcome is not what anyone hoped for. The Birmingham YMCA has been a valued part of the community for generations, and its impact will always be part of our Y story. While this chapter is ending, our commitment to serving families and strengthening communities remains strong across the region.

Memberships for the Birmingham YMCA will be sold through February 28, 2026. Beginning March 1, 30-day and 60-day “sunset passes” will be available for purchase and will allow access to the Birmingham YMCA through April 30, 2026.

Members with a facility membership also have access to all YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit locations.

We know the relationships built at the Birmingham YMCA are meaningful. Members can stay connected by transferring to the same YMCA location, participating in shared programs, or joining the Birmingham YMCA Facebook page. We encourage you to continue your Y journey and remain connected through our broader YMCA community.
