To bring about meaningful change, individuals need ongoing encouragement and tools. We’re here day-in and day-out to provide the resources our communities need to address the most pressing social issues. We work to make sure every child, family and community has what they need to achieve their best.
Young people in underserved communities often do not learn the critical water safety and swimming skills to keep them safe, which results in a disproportionate amount of deaths and injuries each year. The Y is working to address this important issue by offering learn-to-swim programs and raising awareness of the importance of water safety in urban communities nationwide.
The Swims program focuses on early swim instruction techniques that allow a child to become proficient in swim strokes and water safety within only an 8 lesson program, taking children from a fear of water, to early safety skills, to basic swim strokes, to accomplished swimmers.
It takes only $70 to teach every child to swim, and the Y also seeks donation of new or lightly used swim suits and goggles as well. Along with hosting the programs inside a YMCA facility, Ys across Metropolitan Detroit partner with area schools to provide lessons at school swimming pools.
Financial demands surrounding school-age children–-clothing, child care, school supplies, among others–-place additional hardships on families struggling to manage scarce resources. That’s why we partner with community schools to collect school supplies for students in grades K-12 who need them. Project Stuff-A-Backpack is a month-long event in August to collect backpacks and school supplies for low-income families.
To encourage donations, our YMCAs are offering financial incentives for contributions to the campaign. This includes a 75% discount on joiner’s fees to those who make an eligible school supply donation.
To make a school supply donation, you can visit our YMCA (or any YMCA in the area). We provide a drop-off bin the lobby. We then distribute the supplies through a partnership with local schools.

Toys For Tots
Families who are struggling with financial difficulties may not be able to afford holiday toys for their children, and kids living in poverty situations can feel left out of a wonderful and uplifting experience that many kids enjoy. Toys for Tots is able to deliver a powerful message of hope and generosity to kids in our community. That’s why we partner with the Toys for Tots Foundation to collects toys for tots during the month of December.
To contribute, you can drop off a new, unwrapped toy in the lobby at our Y during the month of December.
