Children and teens in Farmington and Farmington Hills will benefit from several grants awarded to the Farmington Family YMCA. Camp Riley and the Teen Camp/Counselor-in-Training programs can provide expanded programming and more scholarships thanks to several local foundations.
Thanks to generous donors, the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign came in well over its goal and hit a four-year high in dollars raised. But beyond the numbers are people who are helped by the campaign; families, children and seniors who are able to be part of the YMCA. Here’s just one of their stories.
Kids who need a little extra help to maintain their school skills over the summer enjoyed nine weeks of Camp Riley through the Farmington Family YMCA. They ended up their summer with new friends, new life skills, and a book they’d written themselves.
Kids in challenging situations in Detroit, Pontiac and Flint have so much fun they don’t realize they’re learning at the YMCA’s Camp Phoenix. And the camp doesn’t just serve the kids; it involves the whole family as well.
Imagine that you are facing eviction from your home, leaving you and your two children homeless just days before Christmas. That was the situation facing Deanna Thompkins and her children this past Christmas. But thanks to a tireless effort by Camp Phoenix staff and the generosity of members of Kensington Church, the family was able to save their home.
In some way or another, our lives have been touched by the three things that make the Y community so strong: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. By listening to each other's stories, we're able to catch a glimpse of all the hope, strength, and determination across southeast Michigan and how everyone's living the Y's values.
