About CrossFit
North Oakland YMCA CrossFit is a non-profit CrossFit affiliate and is located inside of the North Oakland Family YMCA in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Our facility is complete with equipment for the Olympic lifts, kettlebells, Dynamax Balls, rings and Concept II Rower, as well as a regulation size basketball court/gymnasium, swimming pool, running track and child watch.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is strength and conditioning methodology that promotes broad and general overall physical fitness. CrossFit is a combination of metabolic conditioning, weightlifting and gymnastic-type functional movements. These movements are performed in a constantly varied, high intensity format in a small group setting, which is highly motivating and FUN! CrossFit athletes can run, jump, row, swim, climb rope, deadlift and squat, perform the Olympic lifts, pull-ups and sit-ups. Basically, “our specialty is not specializing.”Every workout can be modified to each individual’s needs. Using proper scaling methods, we can work with any injury or physical limitation. Our athletes are prepared for any workout we throw their way.
Is CrossFit for Me?
Here’s the good news! Most anyone can do CrossFit. If you are an athlete looking for additional ways to increase your fitness, are older, or from a special population, CrossFit is infinitely scalable on load and intensity to fit your current fitness level.
How to Get Started in CrossFit
We want our clients to succeed here at North Oakland YMCA CrossFit. We have designed a one-month progressive program of 12 skill-building sessions to fit your budget and to ensure your success. The goal is to get you prepared for the Workout of the Day with Group Training.

One-On-One Training
One-On-One Training is the most effective way to achieve your fitness goals. You will begin your journey with a fitness and nutritional assessment, and twelve progressive sessions of CrossFit foundational movements specifically tailored to your abilities. This is an ideal package for anyone that desires the individual attention needed for physical limitations, sedentary lifestyle or just enjoy working One-On-One with a CrossFit certified trainer for the best results! This program is designed for three progressive sessions per week for four weeks, in order to get you on a regimen of mechanics, consistency and intensity.
One-On-One Training includes:
- Fitness and Nutritional Assessment
- 12 Individualized Personal Training Sessions (including Test Out)
- First month’s membership fee
Foundations 101 (Small-Group Training for 3-8)
The Foundations 101 is designed to emphasize skill development of the basic movements in CrossFit training in a small group setting. Foundations101 is perfect for individuals without limitations, who are currently active and want a money saving option. Our CrossFit certified trainers will provide instruction on the foundations needed to “ramp up” to Group Training Classes. Each session will need to be taken in order and will progressively build-in proper mechanics and intensity. This program is designed for three sessions per week for four weeks.
Foundations 101 (Small-Group Training for 3-8) includes:
- Fitness and Nutritional Assessment
- 12 Small Group Training Sessions
- First month’s membership fee
Testing Out – $65.00
Here at North Oakland YMCA CrossFit, we want our Trainers to be fully engaged in delivering the best possible workout to our members. Our Trainers will be at their best in Group Training sessions if they can work on skill building instead of teaching basic skills. In order to begin Unlimited Group Training (Classes), you must demonstrate your mastery of the basic movements through Testing Out. Contact us to schedule a time to come in and meet with a Trainer.

Group Training (Unlimited Monthly Membership)
Group Training is currently offered Monday through Friday, usually in the morning and evening (please see our current class schedule for days and times). Classes meet for one hour led by one of our CrossFit Certified Trainers and consist of instruction on the day’s workout, a warm-up, Workout of the Day (WOD) and cool-down/stretching.
One-On-One Training, Foundations 101 or Testing Out by one of our CrossFit Certified Trainers is required before entering Group Training.
- $75.00 per month for North Oakland Family YMCA Members
- $150.00 per month for Community Participants
Olympic Weightlifting Instruction
The movements of the Olympic lifts are fundamental to the patterns found in most functional movements and sports. Programs that include the snatch and clean and jerk produce strength, speed and power. The Olympic lifts are an essential foundation of the CrossFit philosophy. We encourage all of our members to take advantage of our regularly scheduled classes in Olympic Weightlifting with our USAWeightlifting and CrossFit Certified Olympic Weightlifting Coaches. The cost for members is $15.00 per one-hour session. Please sign up in advance.
