We work with kids right in their schools to provide youth development opportunities for every child.

Y Enrichment

We offer a menu of fee-based programs that schools or community groups can select from that will provide young people with an array or rich cultural and academically based activities. Programs are available for youth in grades K-12.

Y Magic

Young Misses Achieving Greatness in Communities: For Girls Only! A mentorship and social development program that nurtures young women as they navigate those turbulent hormones and confusing adolescent years. There is a special emphasis on developing healthy relationships with young men, friends, family, and adults. Participating schools include: David Ellis Academy, Detroit Leadership Academy, Hanley Elementary, Star International Academy and Woodward Academy. Y Moves

Y Moneywise/Financial Literacy

What is money? How do you earn it honestly? What is credit? How does one save and build wealth? Youth 11 -17 are taught the basics of money management. Students learn how to write checks and learn the difference between a debit card and a credit card. Participants gain an understanding of advertising and how it affects our consumer choices. Robotics

Academic Games: A competition in which players win by out-thinking each other in mathematics, language arts, and social studies. Formal tournaments are organized by local leagues, and on a national level by the Academic Games Leagues of America. Students can participate in the math games Equations (mathematical operations) or On-sets (logic and set-theory) or in the social studies based game LinguiSHTIK (game that teaches language arts and linguistics). Robotics is an excellent way to helps students improve in Math, Social Studies and English. Available for grades 3-12

CRAFTS

Skilled craftsman share skills and techniques in beading, jewelry making, doll making, and crocheting. These crafts help young people develop the core abilites such as sequencing, concentration, planning and coordination, along with a sense of sharing and entrepreneurship

Mix-DJ Entrepeneurship

An afterschool enrichment class that cultivates self-esteem, confidence and opportunities. Providing technical training and workshops focused on performance, goals and achievement. MIX helps to build a strong community of students developing and utilizing life skills. Students will learn the techniques of how to DJ, music selection, beat blending, equipment set-up and starting a business in DJing. Available for grades 6-12

Martial Arts

Professional Martial Artists train children in basic martial arts. These activities help young people improve concentration, discipline & fitness.

Yoga

Students will gain mental and physical discipline, with an emphasis placed on creating a healthy and fulfilling journey to overall fitness. Yoga is unique in that students gain both strength training and flexibility as they begin to become more proficient. Students will also learn about the human body and nutrition as this is essential to holistic well being. The class can be modified to accommodate any disabilities so that students feel an overall sense of unity while they are working. Available for grades K-12

Storytelling

The conveying of events in words, images and sounds, often by embellishment. Stories or narratives will be shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and to instill moral values. Crucial elements of stories and storytelling include plot, characters and narrative point of view. Strengthens core language arts skills. Available for grades K-6.

Tutorial Services

Schools or community groups can contract the Y to provide tutorial services in reading and math for students in grades K-6
