YOUTH SWIM

Swimming is a life skill as well as great exercise and a challenging sport. Ys offer swim lessons (for all ages), family swim, competitive swim teams, and many kinds of adaptive swim programs for kids with special needs, so we can all safely enjoy the pleasures of an aquatic environment.

ABOUT SWIMMING AT OUR Y

Our Swimming Pools

We have two swimming pools available for members: a Lap Pool and a Training Therapeutic Pool.

Adams Pool

Our lap pool, called the Adams Pool, is a 25 meter pool that goes from 3.5–10 feet deep. The pool temperature is maintained between 82–84 degrees. The YMCA provides lifejackets for swimmers of any size. Check the Adams Pool Schedule for open swim times and programs taking place in the pool.

Robertson Pool

Our training therapeutic pool, called the Robertson Pool, is designed to give people a place to relax after a workout, or simply revive aching joints and muscles. The pool water is maintained 90° F. The Robertson Pool has a zero depth entry ramp and goes up to 5 feet deep. Check the Robertson Pool Schedule for open swim times and programs taking place in the pool.

SAFETY FIRST

Safety is our highest priority. We may ask members to do a swim test for safety purposes.

Swim Testing for Youth

Any swimmer under 18 years of age must take 1 of the 2 swim tests during recreational swims. Adults may be asked to take a swim test at the lifeguard’s discretion.

Deep End Test
  1. Swim one length of the pool or equivalent.
  2. Tread water without touching the pool sides & bottom for 1 minute.
  3. Deep Water Plunge: Swimmer must jump into the deep end and recover to the surface.
Shallow Water Test
  1. Float on back and roll to front.
  2. Recover from floating position to standing position.

Swimmers who cannot pass either test or refuse to take either test will be issued a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Parents with multiple children may work/play with children within arm’s reach if they are 1:1.

Swimmers will be issued a wrist band designating the area in which they may swim. (Red – shallow with PFD, Yellow – shallow PFD not required, Green – access to all areas).

LAP SWIM

Our Adams Pool is always set at appropriate temperatures for exercise or lap swimming. Whenever the Lap Pool is Open, we try to reserve a minimum of two lanes for lap swimmers, but there are times when lap swimming lanes are limited. As a courtesy, please use the “circle swim” technique when more than three swimmers are in your lane.

OPEN SWIM

Open Swim periods are times when the pool is open for families and individuals to just swim around. Sometimes we may need to reserve sections of the pool for private swim lessons or water exercising.
