Girls on the Run combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. Our core curriculum addresses many aspects of girls’ development – their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. Lessons provide girls with the tools to make positive decisions and to avoid risky adolescent behaviors
Girls meet twice each week in small teams of 8-15 girls and learn life skills through dynamic conversation-based lessons and running games. The 20-lessons curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts:
Understanding ourselves
Valuing teamwork
Understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large
The program concludes with the New Balance Girls on the Run 5k, part of the largest youth-focused 5k series in the world. It is a celebratory, non-competitive event for Girls on the Run of Greater Detroit participants and their families and friends. Every girl, whether she runs, skips, walks, or cartwheels across the finish line, is a winner and no official time will be kept.
